Do I need to file Dayton, OH local taxes?

I haven't filed local taxes in the past. I got married last year and my wife and I worked in Kettering, OH but lived in Dayton, OH. Do we need to file Dayton local taxes as well? Toward the end of 2018 my wife switched jobs and worked in Dayton, but I stayed in Kettering. Thank you!

If you reside in the city limits of Dayton, you are required to file a Dayton City income tax return, regardless of where you work, unless your employer withheld the correct amount of Dayton tax.

Dayton allows a full credit for tax paid to other cities. Kettering has a 2.25% tax rate and Dayton was 2.25% until  1-1-17 (when it went to 2.5%).  So, you did not have to file a Dayton return in the past, because the Kettering withholding that your employer did was adequate. If you employer is not now withholding an additional 0.25% for Dayton, you will have to now file a Dayton return.

Your wife has essentially the same situation, but only for part of the year. It may be simpler for you to file separate city tax returns (the tax rate is the same married separately or jointly). You may also have to file a 2017 return.

[EDIT]  Dayton will accept CCA forms.  So you can do the Dayton form in TurboTax.

Please check this answer.  Dayton is an 'associate member' of CCA and TT can do CCA taxes.  As of TurboTax Deluxe 2020, it appears that Dayton, OH taxes can be computed and the forms completed, however at the end of the process, TurboTax warns users that Federal and State returns must be e-filed, but the local return must be printed and mailed.

Yes, Dayton will accept the CCA form, as will Akron, Canton, Cincinnati, Cleveland Heights and Columbus.
At the W-2 screen, in the federal section, use these codes in box 20 for the withholding in box 19.

AKR - Akron
CAN - Canton
CI - Cincinnati
CH - Cleveland Heights
COL - Columbus
DA - Dayton

Although they won't usually admit it, some other cities will also accept CCA forms. So you could try filling out a CCA form on TurboTax and mailing it to your city.

But, I actually find it easier to fill out a city return by hand or at the city, CCA or RITA web site, than to use TT. Things don't happen automatically and you need to know what you’re doing. The actual  city forms are easier to follow than the TT interview.

TT cannot e-file any Ohio City, CCA or RITA return. It must be printed and mailed
