Each state has its own filing threshold so it really depends on the amount you won. For West Virginia, nonresidents are required to file if t West Virginia AGI is greater than the allowable deduction for personal exemptions ($2,000 per exemption or $500 if zero exemptions are claimed).
I live in New York and won in New Jersey. Do you know if I have to file a return in NJ? I already input the W2G onto the federal section but my gambling losses were more than what was reported in the W2G so in essence it’s 0.
Gambling losses are only deductible if you itemize deductions. Your gambling winnings are NJ sourced income. Since you have income from a state other than your resident state, you should indicate that in the Other State Income section which is in the Personal Info (My Info) section of TurboTax. Follow the instructions in How do I file a nonresident return? TurboTax will determine if you have a filing requirement. If you don't owe any NJ tax, don't file NJ. It will depend on how much you won.
If you do owe tax in NJ, then NY will give you a credit for tax paid to another state. So, prepare the NJ return before the resident NY return.
Do I have to file returns in more than one state?
Thank you so much!
