Do I have to pay sales tax if I sell protein bars online with shipping to customers in California?

I am getting conflicting information on this.  On one hand, grocery items are exempt from taxes in California.  On the other hand, "supplement" value food items are charged.  I operate my business from inside california.  Most of my customers are in California who buy my product online.  Should I have been charging sales tax to them?

I don’t think anyone here will know the answer to that question. This is an income tax forum not a sales tax forum.  Income tax rules are pretty much the same across the federal government and most of the states. Sales tax regimes are all over the place. You’ll certainly be required to charge California sales tax to all of your California customers if your items are not tax exempt. You will need to go through the California sales tax website and try to find more specific information. You might also go to a local grocery store in California that sells similar items and see if they charge tax.
