No. Federal tax due payments for a prior year are not deductible.
Hi Volvo girl,
Please elaborate on your 1040v answer above.
Why are 1040V "balance due" payments not treated same as form 4868 "extension" payments? In both cases I've paid taxes in addition to my quarterly estimated taxes.
An extension payment is just like an estimated payment but it goes in it's own spot and line. It is for the current tax return you are filing. It's what you think you will owe when you finish your return. You have to pay any tax due by the due date usually April 15 (May 17 this year for 2020 returns). The extension gives you to Oct 15 to file the return but any tax due is still due April 15. You do enter an extension payment into your tax return. Because you paid it before you filed.
A 1040V voucher is for the tax due result of your tax return. It doesn't get entered anywhere on any year. It's just the final result of your tax return. You never update your return with the final payment. Your tax return will always show the balance due or refund. That is the state of your return when you filed.
