Clergy housing allowance

I am using the Home and Business version.  I have spent hours trying to figure out why my clergy housing allowance is doubled.  It is listed on my W2 - feel like the interface from paycor may have it burried in it somehow.  And then when prompted, I give how much my housing allowance is and then on the SE adj worksheet the value is doubled.  I over wrote it with the correct amount and got all the way to filing and it won't let me file.  This year, I'm very disappointed in what feels like a  bug riddled set of SW in this area!

If the amount is listed on your W2 you do not enter it again. See How do I enter a parsonage or housing allowance reported on a W-2?

 

Ministers can exclude from their income a rental allowance or the fair rental value of a parsonage that is provided to them as pay for their services. This exemption applies only for income tax purposes. The exclusion does not apply to self-employment taxes. For a payment to qualify for the income tax exclusion, the church must officially designate it as a housing or rental allowance before it is actually paid. A definite amount must be designated.

This is still not 100% clear on the page you sent me to... Consider (what was steps 4 and 5 (shown below as 1,2))

  1. On the following screen, choose Clergy and select Continue.
  2. Enter your allowance on the Okay, Tell Us About your Clergy Housing screen. For Qualifying Expenses, enter the lesser of:

It doesn't say any thing about not entering the amount if on your W2... feels confusing at best ... Anyway, thanks for the help...

In the same frustrating loop. Did you not answer those questions and fill in the housing allowance as you had already filled it in from line 14?

For me, while I normally do the step by step, it is easiest to do this part in the forms themselves.  Look at the schedule SE adj sheet in section 2, line 5B.  if you are seeing your housing allowance twice what you expect, you need to take additional action. Go to the W2 for that income.  On the wks (worksheet) make sure you 0 out the housing allowance (since it already has it) but do enter the amount you spent of qualifying expense.  This sorted it out for me.  You could like do the same in the step by step interview by only entering your qualifying expense and not entering anything in the housing allowance question.  Bottom line - somehow Turbo Tax is getting this off the W2 and anything you enter when prompted, seems to be added to what they are already doing.  Hope that helps!

Thank you so much for your help! My schedule SE is correct now by just leaving those two questions unanswered. I wonder how many clergy pay double of this social security taxes?
