City Taxes Now Showing Up

Hi there, I just submitted my taxes online. I completed all the steps as normal and walked through each step very carefully. I have federal, state (Michigan), and city (Detroit) taxes that needed to be filed. It did ask me for the Detroit info and I clicked “File as a Detroit nonresident”. The very last page of the city steps stated along the lines: “We determined you do not owe or are due a refund for city of Detroit”. I submitted everything but my PDF tax returns don’t include Form 5119 which is the city non-resident tax form. Is this correct? Why can’t I see my filed Form 5119? Now I am worried that it didn’t file correctly and the whole thing is wrong. Any assistance? Thanks!

We can't see your return. Detroit has an online portal where you can log in and check your information. See City of Detroit Tax Individual Income Tax. Select Check my tax information.

Thank you for the response. So to be clear, even thought I filed with TurboTax for city, my City Tax form wouldn’t be available to print and see through my TurboTax portal in my documents? That seems odd to me. When I check the link you priced with the State’s website, it just says “no results found”. So I’m confused and worried. I don’t want the City of Detroit coming back to me months later saying I never filed when I did.

Can you clarify when you view your pdf copies of your return.  If the Detroit return not showing?

So I completed the all three taxes in the form. Everything went through just fine. In my app and on desktop, it only shows me State and Federal. No city taxes. When I click “download return”, it only generates the federal and state tax forms PDF. Somebody had a similar situation on this forum maybe a year or two back and the expert that responded prior to you told them at the time that when you file, all THREE (city, state, and federal) would show up in the TurboTax account. That is the problem I am having where it is only showing state and federal. Please look at photo below. I just want to make sure the City of Detroit received my filed city taxes from TurboTax as an agent over the phone told me that Turbo does file directly to City of Detroit and I don’t have to mail in a copy. Thank you!

I would like to take a deeper look at this. However, I need a diagnostic file which is a copy of your tax return that has all of your personal information removed. You can send one to us by following the  directions below:

TurboTax Online:

1. Sign into your online account.
2. Locate the Tax Tools on the left-hand side of the screen. 
3. A drop-down will appear. Select Tools  
4. On the pop-up screen, click on “Share my file with agent.”
5. This will generate a message that a diagnostic file gets sanitized and transmitted to us.
   Please provide the Token Number that was generated in the response.
   
    

TurboTax Desktop/Download Versions:

1. Open your return.
2. Click the Online tab in the black bar across the top of TurboTax and select “Send Tax File to Agent” *
3. This will generate a message that a diagnostic copy will be created.  Click on OK and the tax file will be sanitized and transmitted to us.
4. Please provide the Token Number that was generated in the response.

What I'm seeing looks like at some point you attempted to file an amended return for MI and Detroit. Is it possible that you did that in an attempt to see the entries that you made regarding your Detroit return?  The only Form 5119 I see is an unfinished Amended Form 5119. 

I can't determine how this happened, but I will say that it does not appear that your original Detroit city return has been filed. Since your Michigan return has already been filed, your option at this point is to file through the State of Michigan's website, either by mail or online.

Yes, I attempted to file an amended return in hopes to see that I did, in fact, file a city of Detroit return. I wasn’t sure what I was looking at exactly so then I cancelled it out. I still don’t understand how TurboTax didn’t file my City of Detroit taxes when the system itself literally pushed me through step by step and it even told me “I don’t owe and I am not owed a refund” based on what I filed. It is all just confusing to me. So you’re saying the best thing to do at this point is to re-file just my city taxes? Can I amend it through TurboTax or no?

Yes, you need to file your city tax. The city efile portal shows TurboTax as one of the options. You can file the city through TurboTax. Finish your amended state return to include Detroit. The other option is to mail it in.

I've also ran into this issue trying to submit my Detroit taxes. My return documents only show Federal and Michigan and does not include my City tax form even though I indicated I would need one
