I am doing my son's income tax return. He quit working last year so he could go back to college full time. He is behind in his child support payments due to his lack of income. Will the IRS withhold his refund in the full amount? His projected refund is around $3,200. Thanks

Possibly, the State Child Support Enforcement Office would have to file with the IRS to take his refund for the back child support. If the state is not involved in trying to get his back child support then he will most likely receive his refund
If he is behind in his child support for the amount of $2,000, but his refund is $3,200, will he receive the difference in the event that the state is involved? Thank you.
Yes, once the past debt is satisfied the remaining refund will be issued.
