Can you tell me why the federal refund amount on my tax summary is a different amount than at the top where it says federal due?

This is for a 2023 return i'm amending & is showing towards the end of that amending process.

The summary likely does not take into consideration the tax due or refund you had on your original return. The summary will show your tax return after you make your adjustments, as if that was the original return you should have filed. Since your refund showing on the adjusted return is what should have shown on the original return, the new refund amount will be the difference, not the amount shown on the corrected return. Let's say you had a refund on the return you filed of $100 and the return as corrected shows a refund of $0. The corrected return summary will show $0 as the refund but the amount due will be $100, as you have to pay back the $100 refund you got in error.

Go by the actual 1040X.  Line 18 should be your original refund amount and line 22 should be your additional refund.  If you paid on your original return it will be on line 16.  If there is an amount owed with the amendment, it will be on line 20.

If you have a tax due, do not send the 1040V.  Just include a check with the 1040X.  Ignore the 1040V.  That is for the original return or what the original return would have been if it didn’t need correcting.  Don’t pay the amount on the 1040V.  Pay the amount on the actual 1040X line 20.
