My main question about this is that we purchased a home at the end of august 2021, so would my main residence be the apartment that we lived the rest of the year prior to that? I just want to be sure I answer that question correctly.

If this is asked during the initial interview, answer Yes, you owned your principal residence.
The program is trying to get ready for things a homeowner would need on their tax return, such as reporting Home Mortage Interest and Property Taxes.
Hi KrisD,
I should answer yes even though we only lived in the property we purchased in 2021 for about 4 months? I would think the principal residence was the apartment we rented for the rest of the year.
Edit:
The only reason I ask for more clarification is because I get another 400 or so dollars to my Illinois return, but I don't want any trouble down the line by saying that was my principal residence even tho most of the year we lived in an apartment that we rented and not owned.
If you owned a home on 12/31, the answer to this question is "Yes."
