Can one of you help me understand why Turbotax said I owed zero for my Georgia State tax return, but now I'm being assessed $1,392.00 plus interest and penalty?

I don't know what details might be relevant. Sorry

No one else can see your tax return.   TurboTax guarantees its calculations to be accurate, but TT cannot know if you made a mistake when you entered your income---a misplaced decimal, extra zero, some other kind of typo...or if you left out any income that should have been entered, etc.   What does the state say they changed on your return?   There should be a letter from the state that explains what was changed.

Have you looked back at your return to see if you entered all of your income information correctly?   Look at the amounts entered from boxes 16 and 17 of any W-2's.

If you owe tax, you have to pay that state tax.   If a mistake made by TT resulted in the problem, TT will pay only the interest and/or penalty.   TT is not responsible for user errors.

ACCURACY GUARANTEE

TurboTax provides do-it-yourself tax software.  TurboTax guarantees the calculations done by its software.   The information entered into that software is data entered by you, the user.   TurboTax cannot and does not check that information against any outside sources, so TT cannot know if you entered your information completely or correctly.   It is up to you to enter all of your information correctly and completely, and to check your tax return before you file it.  If you forget to enter some income, or enter it incorrectly, enter it in the wrong place, etc. then you may end up owing additional tax to the IRS and/or state.  TurboTax does not pay the additional tax you owe.   If TurboTax’s calculations were incorrect, and you owe penalties and/or interest, then TT will pay the penalties and interest.  The tax due is always owed by you, and must be paid by you.
