I think there was a point where Turbo Tax let me choose simple or complex trust, now I realize that it should be a complex trust but the program won't let me change it to complex.
The trust owner died in 2019 and I made substantial distributions from the principle to the beneficiaries. Now when I try to list the distribution amount to each beneficiary, the maximum total amount I can list is hard-coded based on the gains for 2019 because it's being considered a simple trust.
This is not the last return for the trust. That will be next year.
Turbo Tax says they've "chosen" simple for me, but if that's the case, I'd like to know what they've based that on so that it can be modified and I can change to a complex trust.

I assume you're using the CD for business returns to do a trust tax return. If you go into the "Introduction" tab under "General Info" you can edit the type of trust you are preparing.

@1moretaxpayer - yes it's the CD for businesses and trust, etc.
Thank you - that worked!
There's another spot where they allow you to edit the type, but not simple/complex. (I think it needs to be fixed!)
