Payment was rejected when the return was rejected.

No refunds are given on the TT fees  since successful efiling was never guaranteed.  The fee is for the use of the program to complete a return that can be filed even if you need to mail in the return.  You have the option to print the return and mail it in if you think you should not have been claimed as a dependent   OR  if you are incorrect then fix your return and resubmit it.

If you CAN be claimed as someone else's dependent, and they already filed and claimed you, your SSN is in the system and you cannot e-file a return that says you cannot be claimed.  So......can you be claimed?   If you can be claimed as someone else's dependent then go to My Info and change the way you answered the question that asked if you can be claimed.  Then try to e-file again.

If someone claimed you as a dependent and you cannot be claimed, then the only way you can file is by mail.   Then the IRS will sort out the duplicate use of your SSN.  Make sure you know if you can or cannot,, in fact, be claimed as someone else's dependent.

Do you meet the criteria to be someone else's qualified child or qualified relative?

WHO CAN I CLAIM AS A DEPENDENT?

You can claim a child, relative, friend, or fiancé (etc.) as a dependent on your 2022 taxes as long as they meet the following requirements:

Qualifying child

  • They're related to you.
  • They aren't claimed as a dependent by someone else.
  • They're a U.S. citizen, resident alien, national, or a Canadian or Mexican resident.
  • They aren’t filing a joint return with their spouse.
  • They're under the age of 19 (or 24 for full-time students).
    • No age limit for permanently and totally disabled children.
  • They lived with you for more than half the year (exceptions apply).
  • They didn't provide more than half of their own support for the year.

Qualifying relative

  • They don't have to be related to you (despite the name).
  • They aren't claimed as a dependent by someone else.
  • They're a U.S. citizen, resident alien, national, or a Canadian or Mexican resident.
  • They aren’t filing a joint return with their spouse.
  • They lived with you the entire year (exceptions apply).
  • They made less than $4,400 in 2022.
  • You provided more than half of their financial support
