According to the TurboTax Help files:
Yes, the IRS will allow tax returns for deceased taxpayers (also called decedent returns) to be e-filed.
Before you file a decedent return, make sure the Social Security Administration has been notified of the taxpayer's death. You can either go to their website or call [phone number removed].
Many (but not all) states allow decedent tax returns to be e-filed as well. We'll let you know when you get ready to e-file the state return.
I appreciate the response. I would like to know before I go through the process. It would be nice to see a list of states that accept e-filing for a decendant.
A deceased person returned no results on the state website. Our program will let you know when you reach that point. There is not a published list but many states have nice articles. I am sorry for your loss. The IRS has a quick How Do I File a Deceased Person interactive assistant. It is very detailed and may give you additional information.
