Can I e-file a manually filled Form 1040-X using TT? What are the steps?

1. I made a Nondeductible contribution to traditional IRA

2. I filed my tax return with the nondeductible contribution listed on Form 8606

3. I recharacterized the contribution as a Roth IRA afterwards

4. I just want to file an amended return stating the above

I am curious if TurboTax supports e-filing a manually filled Form 1040-X (the amended return)? If so, could someone tell me what are the steps to do so? Thanks

No, although you can prepare an amended return and paper file it.  However, that it is not a simple thing to do.  If you're going to do it I suggest you use TurboTax Desktop software.  You will have to recreate your original tax return exactly as it was filed.  Once you have done that, you will tell the software that you are filing the return by mail so that the software thinks that return was filed.  Then use the "Amend" feature in the program to create an amended return.  You will have to print and mail the amended return.

There is an easier way to accomplish what you want to do.  Instead of amending your 2025 return, you can file a superseding return.  A superseding return is a tax return filed after an original return but before the filing deadline (including extensions), which completely replaces the first submission. It is treated as the official original filing by the IRS.  But like an amended return, you cannot e-file it with TurboTax.  You will have to print and mail it.  You must Print "Superseding Return" at the top of the return.

Thanks. If I file a superseding return, do I have to attach all the documents as if I was filing the original return? Is the fact that I have to paper-file it, a limitation of TT software or the IRS does not allow e-filing of Superseding return?

Missing Form 8606:

Did you do a true backdoor contribution that is tax-free, or planned to be?
in that case Form 8606 will show a taxable amount of zero.
Do you have the correct taxable amount on Form 1040 Line 4b and did not take a deduction? (Schedule 1 Line 20)?
If that is all true then only Form 8606 has to be attached to 1040-X.
After you e-File,
get Form 1040-X from IRS website and mail it in with your <year> 8606, which you can also get in fillable PDF under "prior forms"..
Note: when you are not changing any dollar amounts on your amending 1040-X, you can leave all the lines 1-23 EMPTY.

Part II explanation: "didn't include Form 8606 with e-File".
You will have to mail it so this does not use up your one 1040-X e-File.
Done this way, you sign 1040-X, not 8606.

Do not include your old 1040 nor your revised 1040 because they are identical

Missing explanation statement:

If you just worried about an explanation statement and your return is correct, do not be worried.

There is nothing to do.
