Can I do my son's tax return for him?

Generally, you can claim your child as a dependent if:

·      The child is a U.S. citizen or resident who lived with you over half the year (temporary absences from the home while away at school count as time spent living with you);

·      The child is under age 19, or under age 24 if a full-time student;

·      You provide over half of their support;

·      The child is not claimed as a dependent by anyone else; and

·      The child is not filing a joint return.

For more information, please see Rules for Claiming a Dependent on Your Tax Return.

However, I will say. In order to technically "do your son's tax return for him?" you will have to set up a new TurboTax account. You can still use the email you used for your own tax return (that way any news/important information comes into your email inbox) however you will have to generate a new password to set up a different account.

Upon doing so, you can classify him on his own TurboTax account as "your dependent," but you (or him) will have to generate his own unique TurboTax account.

I hope this information helps!

Best of luck!
