Can I claim my friend's son as a dependent?

I paid for my friend's son last year for college tuition, rent, and expenses. He is just a friend and not related to me and he didn't live with me in 2017. Can I still deduct the money paid in any way or can I claim him as a dependent?

No. An unrelated person must live in your home for the entire year to be claimed as a dependent. Please view the Qualifying Relative rules for dependents. https://turbotax.intuit.com/tax-tips/family/rules-for-claiming-a-dependent-on-your-tax-return/L8LODb...
