Can anyone tell me why my state return says that the amount inputted should not exceed the prior year state and local tax refund reported? I keep getting this message.

I have tried several times to put in the correct amount for my 2023 tax return and yet its still telling me that the amount inputted is wrong.

Where exactly in the program did you make the entry that resulted in the message that the amount you entered exceeded the state and local refund reported?

Sometimes the state refund you received includes amounts that were not refunds of state taxes paid; for example, such amounts as certain refundable credits, real property tax credit, earned income credit, child and dependent care credit, and school tax credit.

See this help article for information about when to report your state or local refund on your return.

I am on the last part of my 2024 state tax return section before review from a smart check and it asked me how much I received from the state of MO in 2023 but will not accept the value that is present on my 2023 tax return that I filed with TurboTax. Every time I input a amount into the system it says that there is one more thing to be corrected and that the amount cannot exceed the previous year etc.

You can enter the state refund amount in your federal return and the amounts will transfer over to your state return.  To enter in TurboTax follow these steps:

  1. Sign in to TurboTax
  2. Select Wage & Income
  3. Select Other Common Income
  4. Click Start next to Refunds Received for State/Local Tax Return
