Anyone else have serious problems with CA (California) Form 3805 Underpayment of Estimated Tax for Individuals?
In connections with filing Form 540, I want to use the annualized method AND compute the tax myself.
PROBLEM #1: Through the software, I chose the annualization method of computing the penalty. The output (Form 3805) Side 1 Part 1 Box 2 is correctly checked YES. However, on Side 2, Line 13 TurboTax places a number on Line 13. If you read the instructions under SHORT METHOD CAUTION at the middle of the page, the CA Franchise Tax Board clearly states “If you answered yes to Question 2 in Part 1, skip this part and got to Part III.” Anyone who understands taxes knows the short method is different from the annualization method. Again, there should be no number on Line 13!
PROBLEM #2: On Side 3, Part III, Line 1, the TurboTax input screen screen states to enter FEDERAL AGI. This is clearly wrong as Form 3805 itself states “Enter California adjusted income”. I had to enter the California numbers instead.
PROBLEM #3 Normally, worksheets are not included as part of any return to be filed. TT, when selecting all forms required for filing, print out Page 4 of the CA 5805 instructions. I did not see anything in the CA Franchise Tax Board’s instructions asking a taxpayer to mail in a worksheet. I assume it’s meant to be a statement attached as the taxpayer should show the tax calculation somewhere. TT placed my name and SSN on top, so I assume that is the case. Can anyone confirm?
PROBLEM #4 With respect to Page 4, TT left the column labeled 1/15/22, lines 10 and 11 blank! These should be filled in per the actual CA Form 5805 instructions. There is an error in TT when doing a page view in that the 1/15/2022 column is greyed out. So my guess is this error results in numbers that do not map to the printed form. This is a major software effort to be frank.
PROBLEM #5 Also, with respect to Page 4, TT generates “SEE STATEMENT” at the bottom of the worksheet. This should not be there as it serves no purpose. By leaving “SEE STATEMENT” at the bottom you are triggering the CA Franchise Tax Board to look for a statement that is not there and not necessary.
Can anyone help with this? Am desperate as my return needs to be filed by Oct 17th!
