Running windows desktop version of turbotax premier -If you enter tax exempt interest in box 8 of 1099-INT and press continue (twice) a pages asks for a breakdown of the total in box 8. If the tax exempt interest is from more than one state, you select the second radio button and enter the breakdown state by state. Upon completion it gives you an error message for the value of the first state you entered: "The total amount you entered doesn't equal your reported tax-exempt interest in Box 8 of your 1099-INT." This is a bug. Obviously, if the interest is from multiple states, none of the amounts for any given state can equal the amount in box 8.
This same bug is present in the software for 1099-DIV box 12 for tax exempt dividends.
Please fix this bug!!

are you entering all the states, and does it all add up to the total? if it doesn't add up then yes you will get an error on the first state. But generally you should only need 2 entries, your home state to subtract from your state taxes, and "multiple states" for the rest.
The technique you mentioned worked.
ok good just to add I realized from a similar thread on this that interest from US territories (Puerto Rico etc) may be exempt in your state also, if so you may want to add those %s also
another thread on this with expert explainer
