Are there any tax breaks that I can claim for supporting my dad with more then half of his expenses, but not being able to file him as a dependent because he filed a joint return

The only deduction you can claim when you don't claim someone as a dependent only because they filed a joint return is the medical expenses.  If you paid for his medical expenses and are itemizing your return, you can include his medical expenses as an expense on your return.
