Anyone else get screwed over by turbotax messing up line 30?

nope

Single, No dependents, No spouse, did not file previous year.

I received the $1400 and stated that. and i haver two letters from IRS stating so, and i went on line to check as well. I was due in excess of $850 refund, and several thousand State, ( many medical Bills paid last year) So if you take $1400 and subtract my $850 deduction, it Miraculously equals the amount I now owe them.

and if none of this was suppose to appear on out taxes, why is the question even there?

@Kamcginty -

because the law required the Recovery Credits to be based on the 2021 tax return, which obviously wasn't available when the stimulus payments were made last spring.

So the stimulus payments of last spring used the information for the 2020 (or 2019) tax return to ESTIMATE what you were due.

the 2021 tax return is used to ACTUALLY determine what you are due; the difference, but not less than zero ends up on Line 30 (if you were sent too much last spring, you are not required to return it my law)

Think of the family that had their first child in 2021.  When the stumulus payments went out last spring, they received $2800, even though they are entited (because Baby is on the 2021 tax return but not on the 2020 or 2019 tax return) to $4200.  THAT is an example of  why this reconciliation had to be on the 2021 tax return - some people were entitled to more than they received last spring.

did you file "joint"?????

doesn;'t make sense....  in your scenario, TT would have calculated you were due $1400 (I am assuming your income was less than $75,000) and if $1400 appears on Line 30, the only want that could occur is if you really didn't enter the $1400 in TT.

Did you go back into TT and confirm that you really entered the $1400 where required? Did you enter it in the correct field?

Remember, TT calculated the Benefit automatically (in your case $1400) and subtracts what you entered and places the difference (but not less than zero) on Line 30

I tried to correct the problem but it told me the IRS would correct it for me I tried to redo my taxes and it would not allow me to do so. I was concerned about my state returns because this would be an impact. I had to go ahead and pay the fine because of the interest that was calculating and I don’t have that money

Anyone else get screwed over by turbotax messing up line 30?

@Kamcginty - there is no need to amend the federal taxes

on the state return, there should be no impact.

They audited me already !

and I paid the “taxes due” on the federal so the interest would not build up.

I had to give in because no one answers the phone at IRS and I can not afford the interest.
I will eat Ramen Noodles for a while

Anyone else get screwed over by turbotax messing up line 30?

My refund has been held up on my 2021 taxes because my return was being checked for accuracy. So I've waited and waited and still the same message about my refund being delayed, blah blah blah. So I decided to do some research as to why this may be, because our joint return was super simple for 2021! Just a couple of 1099's basically, so I'm like accuracy?! Then I realized that I had not entered the $2800 on Line 30 for the third stimulus payment! I don't think we ever received IRS letter 6475, giving us instructions for our return. So, I had forgotten all about it and there is no amount entered on Line 30. So, I'm assuming this is what's held up our refund this year? And I don't remember TT asking me about this stimulus payment either. It says Do NOT file an amended return with the IRS. I'm wondering if this happened to anyone else? Is there anything I can do or should do? I'm supposed to get a refund and I've read that receiving that third payment should not affect my refund amount. I'm hoping that is true?

What happens though if I did receive the third payment for $2800 (married, joint) but the amount on Line 30 is "0"? I don't know how I missed that question. Actually, I don't even remember TT asking me about a stimulus payment for 2021 at all?! So, my refund has been delayed and I received a letter from the IRS in April saying they are checking my return for accuracy. Is this the most likely reason why? Is there anything I need to do or should do? I'd love to get my refund this year!

Anyone else get screwed over by turbotax messing up line 30?

@Bamatami  If you already got the 2800 3rd Stimulus payment then line 30 should be ZERO!  Line 30 is only if you didn't get the full amount or qualify for more.

If you did not get prompted to enter your stimulus information, that means you either:

  1. Filed as a dependent being claimed on another tax return, or
  2. have an AGI too high to claim the recovery rebate credit

No credit is allowed when AGI is at least the following amount:

  • $160,000 if married and filing a joint return or if filing as a qualifying widow or widower
  • $120,000 if filing as head of household or
  • $80,000 for all others.

If your 2021 is too high to qualify for the Recovery Rebate Credit it won't ask you for it.  If your AGI is too high you don't have to enter what you got or letter 6475 and you don't have to pay it back and it is not taxable.  See IRS Topic H 3rd question

The IRS  is taking longer this year.  Like 6 months or more.  Just keep waiting.   You do not need to amend if you have the wrong amount on line 30 for the Recovery Rebate Credit.  If it is wrong the IRS will automatically adjust it for you.  They know how much you are eligible for and how much, if any, they already sent you.

Anyone else get screwed over by turbotax messing up line 30?

@Bamatami if you received the 3rd stimulus payment, then the correct entry on Line 30 is zero......you were asked during the interview process how much you received for the 3rd stimulus and you must have answered "$2800" as that is the only way Line 30 could have been zero (and I assume there are only two people listed on your tax return).

So that is not the reason for the delay.

GIven the IRS backlogs and delays, the best advice is patience.  You know the IRS has your return so it just a matter of time,,,,,
