TurboTax error FPYMT-072-01 indicates an IRS rejection because the requested electronic payment date is invalid, usually because it's too far in the past or after the filing deadline. To resolve it, re-submit the return with the direct debit payment date set to the current date or a date within the allowed range (not after 4/15/2026).
Yes! This is happening to me right now. But if 4/15 is the due date, why would my returns be rejected? I don't know how to adjust this. So I just tried e-filing again. I selected the "File Now, Pay Later" option (3-month installments) and all payments were scheduled to pull on the 15th of the month. I didn't see where I'd be able to "edit" the date of these payments. Could someone help?
Today's date 04/15/2026 is already entered and it will not allow me to change it even if I wanted to.
Your solution doesn't work. Today's date is already entered and I've been rejected 4 times.
I have submitted 4 times and had no way of changing any date. Now we are after the due date and still can’t figure out what error TurboTax is having when it is not a date I have the ability to change. HELP!
I made zero changes and kept resubmitting. It was finally accepted after midnight. What the heck! Then there was no issue to begin with but the system making me late for all I can tell.
IRS rejection code FPYMT-072-01 occurs when the Requested Payment Date for an electronic tax payment is scheduled for a date after the tax return's due date. You can tell TurboTax you will mail a check and then pay at the IRS pay site to resolve the error.
So you just kept resending with the 3 month payment plan and it finally went through? I’m having the same issue as well and mine keep getting rejected…
This doesn't help if you're trying to use File Now Pay Later.
Mine was accepted after midnight but after I chose the option to set up a payment plan with the IRS which I wanted to avoid. I was also worried about a late fee but apparently if I submitted before midnight it doesn't matter that it was accepted after midnight. I was even told that if it were rejected I could have had up to 5 days to get it corrected before a late fee would have kicked in.
