Any advice with using TT and not filing (i.e not needing to pay Intuit)? I'm considering using TT to check the work my tax person is doing.

If you log in to TurboTax Online you can do your federal  tax return right to the end.

If you don't try to submit or print it, you won't be asked to pay.

Thanks!

Have you done this before?

I want to understand if there are any negative consequences of leaving an online completed return and not file through TT.

For example if I do this and then next year I decide to file 2022 return with TT...this is just one example.

First you will not be able to see the entire return without paying the online fee ... just the 1040 so it may not do enough for you.

If you have not paid for the online edition you are using, have not filed your tax return or registered the Free edition, then you can clear your return and start over (or just abandon the account) . Click on Tax Tools on the left side of the program screen while working on the 2020 online tax return. Click on Clear & Start Over.

You can peek at only  the Federal form 1040 and the summary of the state info by going here:

1) lower- Left side of the screen...click to the left side of the "Tax Tools" text selection.
2)  then select "Tools"
3) then select "View Tax Summary" from the pop-up
4) then back to the left-side and "Preview 1040"

Then hit the "Back" on the left side to get back to your tax entries.

To view your entire return using the online editions (including the state) before you file, you will need to pay for your online account.

To pay the TurboTax online account fees by credit card, without completing the 2021 return at this time, click on Tax Tools >>> Tools  and then Print Center.  Then click on Print, save or preview this year's return.  On the next page, to pay by credit card, click Continue.  On the next screen it will ask if you want Audit Defense, if you do not want this option just click on the Continue button.  The next screen will ask for all your credit card information so you can pay for the account.
