AMT from last year

I am using TurboTax2020 HB version. there is a question popup when I am doing m personal income section, it asks "do you have different capital loss carryover amounts for AMT", I picked "No" (as Yes is not common)and continue. Then it asks me to find this AMT value from 2019 year's form 6251 Line 4.

However from 2019 my tax records, I don't have this form 6251. because of this, I click the link "what if I dont have form 6251", the further instruction tells me to check Form 1040 line 10 from last year, for this line 10 on the form 1040, it is a blank, nothing filled there. (By the way, line 10 for 2019 is "10 Qualified business income deduction. Attach Form 8995 or Form 8995-A .")

I suspect this is a bug in TurboTax, line 10 in 2020 form1040 is diff from line 10 in 2019 form 1040

Line 10 in 2020 form 1040 makes more sense but line 10 in 2019 doesn't. Instead, maybe line 8b from 2019 form 1040.

So now, I don't know how to provide this value and continue my tax return.

Any help?

Form 6251 is for Alternative Minimum Tax (AMT).  If you did not pay AMT last year, you could enter $0 or leave the field blank.

If that does not work you may delete the form.

Delete Form 6251 by following these steps:

  • From the left menu, select Tax Tools
  • Tools
  • Delete a form
  • Scroll to Form 6251 and confirm you want to delete it
  • Continue on with your 2020 tax filings

The AMT carryover and QBI carryover are two different things. The program is first trying to decide if you have an AMT capital loss carryover amount. When you say you don't have an AMT form 6251, then TurboTax knows you don't have an AMT carryover, so then it moves on to the issue of a QBI carryover.

So, enter $0 for the QBI amount if none appears on your 2019 tax return.
