I submitted my 2024 Federal Tax Return on April 15 using TurboTax and noticed I made an error. Correcting the error increased the amount owed to the IRS. I sent an additional direct payment to the IRS the followng day to cover it and noted that it was related to an amended return (which I couldn't yet make since the original filing was not yet accepted).
I'm now amending my return in TurboTax. I want to include the direct payment I made to the IRS so that the program won't be requiring me to make the payment again. TurboTax is requiring me to enter a date I want the payment to be made.
When I go to the to the "Estimates and Other Taxes Paid" area - I see two options - neither of which apply - estimated taxes paid in 2024 and payments made with 2024 extension.
Is there a way to get the amended file to show the direct payment and reduce the amount owed by that amount?
OK - A VERY HELPFUL TURBOTAX REP SOLVED THIS PROBLEM:
GO TO AMEND...DEUDCTIONS AND CREDITS...ADD A DEDUCTION OR CREDIT...ESTIMATED TAX PAYMENT...FEDERAL ESTIMATED TAX PAYMENT FOR 2024...ABLE TO INCLUDE THE PAYMENT HERE AS AN ADDITIONAL PAYMENT WITH THE DATE IRS RECEIVED IT

Yes. You can add this extra payment while you're preparing your 1040X. In Deductions and Credits, under Estimates and Other Taxes Paid, choose Estimates. Next select, Federal Estimated taxes for 2024, and at the bottom of that page select +Add another payment under the Additional Payments section. Enter the date paid and the amount, then continue. Include a summary explanation for this change in your reason for amending too.
