I finished my amended return with help on the phone from a Turbo Tax agent. We went through the forms, and I owe $243. on the federal return. The agent assured me that there would be no need to do an amended return for the state. Oregon. When I printed out my return to mail it, it printed a state return saying I owe $1700. to the state. How do I proceed now?
If you owe $1700 to the state then you need to file the return and pay what is owed. The agent who told you it was not necessary to file the state amendment might not have realized that you owed money.
when you filed your original state return was there a balance due and did you pay it. That payment would not be reflected in the state amended return. it would be unusual that you would owe $243 to feds but $1700 to state. our problem is that we can't see either the original or amended K-1 and if states other than Oregon (your resident state?) are involved.
I need to make one slight correction; the amount was $1171.00 not $1700. But that is a minor detail. I do not owe any money, I paid $957.00 in full to the state for 2022 and received a refund of $1075.00 from the Federal return. When I started filling out the amended return the software returned the Federal return information at the top of the page to zero, the amount you owe or get. But it did not zero the state information. When I printed out the Federal amended return it automatically printed out the state without doing anything separate work for the state amended return. Should I attempt to do a separate amended return for the state? My K-1 tells me that I have $1323.00 to pay taxes on. $243.00 seems high, but $1171.00 seems crazy. @@@@@
Okay, went into Turbo Tax and revised my Oregon state amended return. It showed that I had a $1075. refund from the Oregon 2022 tax return. I deleted that and the amount owed is now $96.00. I can definitely live with that. Thanks for all the help. Your suggestions inspired me to dig deeper. Thank you.
