Adjusted Gross Income

I am trying to file the taxes for my son and his wife.  I keep having them rejected due to the AGI.  The system wants my sons AGI, or his wife's from 2018.  I don't have that, but I do have their combined AGI.  The system won't take that.  How do I get their separate AGI's if they foiled jointly?

For a 2018 joint return the 2018 AGI's for both spouses are the same.   i.e., if they filed jointly in 2018, you use the same total AGI for both.   Do not divide it or otherwise allocate it.

Use the 2018 AGI from the original 2018 return, not an amended one.  Look at the return and be sure you are using the correct figure.  It's on Page 2, Line 7 of the 2018 Form 1040.    (On the printed 2018 form, Pages 1 and 2 actually print on the same side of the page.)

If they filed real late in the year, such as after mid-November 2019, you would need to use an AGI of 0 for each.

Also, here's a FAQ and video that might help as far as finding the 2018 AGI from the 2018 return to be sure you're using the right figure.

Everything you stated makes sense, and I have tried using the one from their 2018 return but it still gets rejected.  Since I'm making headway e-filing them I went to print, so they could be mailed, and now it says there are errors that need fixing.  The error is that my sons W2 shows local taxes paid but no local wages and the system says there has to be local wages.  The local wage box on the W2 is blank.   Never have had so much trouble filing as I am with the kids taxes.

Thanks for your help.,

If it won't accept the 2018 AGI shown on their 2018 tax return, you could either get a free 2018 IRS tax return transcript to verify what the IRS is showing for the 2018 AGI as mentioned in that FAQ provided above

https://www.irs.gov/individuals/get-transcript

or  before giving up and mailing, you could try efiling with an AGI of 0 just in case it works.  Normally an AGI of 0 won't work unless someone filed real late in the year, such as after mid-November 2019 or later.  But I've seen users occasionally report that it worked for no logical reason, kind of like a "Hail Mary" football pass.

Sorry I can't help you with anything to do with local wages and local taxes.  I would suggest you start a new thread dedicated to that question to see if anyone responds.     At the page below click the blue "Ask a Question" button.    Then in the question title mention the issue about local wages and local taxes to attract someone who can comment on it.  Space is limited in the title, but there is a box underneath for more details as you did when you asked your original question in this thread.

I tried what you suggested several times.  It didn't matter, the system just kept responding back that the AGI was incorrect.

So I just printed the returns and mailed them.

Thanks anyway.  Bob
