You are correct that this seems counter-intuitive, but since we in the Community cannot see your private tax data, we will have to make a general observation.
If you were to submit a request to TurboTax Live for a review of your return with this question, the first thing we would do is take a snapshot of your 1040 without the child (original case) and then compare that to the 1040 after you added the dependent.
This should pinpoint exactly what changed.
When you find that, you can look at the schedule that the number comes from (if one), or come back to the Community and ask us why line such-and-such on form so-and-so would change if you added a dependent. Then we would be happy to help you.
