Added $1 to bank interest and still can't efile?

My W2 boxes 1 and 2 are zero because of difficulty of care exempt so because of that I can't efile, But I see people saying you can add a dollar of interest so I did that in the 1099-int but when I go to file it still just gives me the option to file by mail or I'm not ready to file.

Am I missing something else?

Try this option from this TurboTax Help Article.

  1. Open or Continue Your Return:
    • TurboTax Online/Mobile: Go to W-2.
    • TurboTax Desktop: Search for "w-2" and select the "Jump to" link.
  2. Enter W-2 Information:
    • Enter all the information from your W-2 form, except for Box 1.
    • If Box 3 has a number instead of zero, enter that number in Box 1.
  3. Nontaxable Medicaid Waiver Payments:
    • On the "Let’s check for uncommon situations" screen, check the box for "Nontaxable Medicaid waiver payments that qualify as difficulty of care payments."
    • Enter the amount of Medicaid waiver payments you received in the "difficulty of care payment you received from IHHS" box.
    • This amount should be the same as what's reported in boxes 3 and 5 of your W-2.
  4. Earned Income Credit:
    • When you reach the "Earned Income Credit" section in "Deductions & Credits," TurboTax will ask if you want to add your Medicaid waiver payment to your income for this credit.
    • You can choose the option that benefits you the most.

I add the box 3 amount to box 1 but after I continue from that "Nontaxable Medicaid waiver payments that qualify as difficulty of care payments." doesn't appear as a choice in uncommon situations

When I tested this solution, after entering the W-2 information, TurboTax presented me with the below additional options. If you didn't see these options, please try the following steps:

  1. Delete your W-2 information.
  2. Clear your browser's cookies and cache.
  3. Re-enter your W-2 information.

This should help you see the options I mentioned.

Okay I found why it won't show on my w2, in box 12d its has a letter code of II medicaid waiver payments excluded from gross income under notice 2014 -7, when I take that out and continue then the option you mentioned showed.

Could that be left off and and just do it the first way you mentioned or would that be a bad idea.

Per this TurboTax Help Article you have 3 options:

  1. Enter the W-2 exactly how it came with the $0 in Box 1 and the amount in Box 12D with code II.  If you choose this, you will not be able to e-file because your W-2 has $0 in box 1.
  2. The work around I gave you earlier, which will allow you to e-file.
  3. Do not enter the W-2 at all, which is okay if you don't expect to qualify for the Earned Income Credit or Additional Child Tax Credit.
