My return won't let me go any further because it says i have schedule 1. why can't i use the free version?

Unfortunately, Schedule 1 is not included in the Free Edition.

I suggest your try Free File Edition. While the name is similar, there are no upgrade fees.

To you qualify

Make less than $34,000 a year or

Qualify for the Earned Income Credit or

Active military making less than $66,000
