I both was self employed & worked a job in 2021.  I completed my 2021tax return using my W2 form without including my self employment. How do I complete a self employed tax return for the 2021 year

    2 tax returns is not allowed.

    you have to combine all income on one tax return.

    Now, use Form 1040-X to add or correct information on an already filed tax return.

    You can get that Form and its Instructions at the IRS website.

    You have to amend your 2021 tax return, just as @fanfare has indicated.   All of your 2021 income was supposed to be included on the same Form 1040, including the self-employment income.  You will have to prepare a Form 1040X and mail it in.  Expect it to take the IRS six to nine months to process that amended return.

    If you have W-2 income and self-employment income for 2022, then you will need to use online Self-Employed software, or any version of the CD/download in order to enter the self-employment income and prepare the Schedule C you will need for your business expenses.

    Even during “normal” times it takes about four months for the IRS to process an amended return.  During the pandemic and due to the severe backlog at the IRS it is taking much longer—six to nine  months or more for many amended returns.  Do not expect quick results from amending.  When the IRS issues a refund for an amended return it will be by check.  They do not make direct deposits for refunds for amended returns.  You can watch for information here:

    And...remember to amend your state return as well, if you live in a state that has a state income tax.

    @DA91 - no!

    Regardless of the type of jopb you had (employed and self-employed), you are to report all the income earned from all sources on the SAME tax return EACH year.
