I received an email notification this morning saying the form 8911 was ready and I was able to enter an amount for my Energy-Efficient Vehicle Charging Station. However, the app said my credit was $0. And when I went to the Federal Review step, it shows the Form 8911 was "available soon." So perhaps that is why the credit was still showing as $0?

The form is available, but the software was not updated to handle the form... Perhaps they are getting the approval from the IRS, since it seems as though e-File returns were being rejected because of this issue.

(NOTE: This is complete speculation on my part based on comments on these forums - I have no insider information.)

I've been trying for a week to get the system to give me this credit, but it still comes up $0.  I tried a popular online competitor and they don't even allow you to claim this credit through their system.. so I guess I'll keep checking back?  I was really hoping to file before the prices went up.

I do see that you aren't eligible if you're paying alternative minimum tax, but I'm fairly sure that I'm not this year.

If anyone has had luck one way or another, please share 🙂

I was working on my Turbo Tax return today (March 12th) and even though the Feds say the form/credit are now available for 2018 & 2019, I was unable to find this form anywhere on Turbo Tax.

If anyone does find out how to use form 8911 on Turbo Tax, please post to the community.  thank You.

I was able to fill out the form today, March 15, but I am also coming up with a $0 credit. I am not paying AMT according to TurboTax calculations.

When will this form be available for TurboTax 2018, in order to allow us to submit revised 2018 taxes?  This form is supposed to be retro-active (per the IRS guidelines) for the 2018 filing year.

See this TurboTax support FAQ for the 2018 software which includes the Tax Extenders - https://ttlc.intuit.com/community/tax-topics/help/2018-extenders-passed-under-taxpayer-certainty-and...

According to the IRS instructions for the 2019 form 8911 (revised March 2020), it appears that you can retroactively claim the Alt Fuel Credit for a home EV charging station that was placed in service in 2018.  It doesn't sound like you need to amend your 2018 return.  Check out the instructions here:

https://www.irs.gov/pub/irs-pdf/i8911.pdf

Purpose of Form
Use Form 8911 (Rev. February 2020) to figure your credit for alternative fuel vehicle refueling property you placed in service during your tax year beginning in 2018 or 2019.

Am I not reading this correctly?

If I am reading this correctly, then when you get to the entry of the form, and click on the blue underlined text "Read these important credit qualifications", a popup opens and explains the following:

Credit Requirements
The following conditions must be met to qualify for this credit:
- You started using the station in 2019.
- You are the original owner of the station.
- The station is used primarily in the United States.
- The station is installed at a residential or business location.

Does the first bullet need to be amended to say "You started using the station in 2018 or 2019"?

NOTE: To get to that Step-by-Step entry for form 8911, go to PERSONAL-> Deductions & Credits -> Cars and Other Things You Own -> Energy-Efficient Vehicle Charging Station
