I made an error on my 1040 Schedule A concerning Mortgage Interest.
I had form 1098 from my mortgage companies and this amount should be on Line 8a. of schedule Also, I had a small amount of $285.21 that should have been on line 8b of the schedule A since I did not receive a 1098 form from that bank. If it is less than $600, no form 1098 is issued.
The issue: I need to file an amended tac retturn that decrsae the amount on Line 8a and has an amount on line 8b...but I do not dsee how to separate the two sums in the desktop application.
Thanks for any help.

Why do you need to file an amended return? Moving $285 from line 8a to line 8b on Schedule A is not going to make any difference in your tax.
Did you get an IRS notice about the amount of mortgage interest that you claimed on your 2024 tax return? If you did not get a notice, I would not bother to file an amended return.
If you did get an IRS notice, does the notice say that you should prepare an amended return? Follow the instructions in the notice for how to respond. Don't file an amended return unless the notice says to do that. If it does say to prepare an amended return, follow the instructions in the notice for where to send the amended return. Do not send it to the address that TurboTax gives you.
If you do have to prepare an amended return, there is no way to enter an amount on line 8b in the Step-by-Step interview (except for a seller-financed loan, which does not seem to be your situation). You have to make the entry in forms mode.
After you start the amended return, first correct the line 8a amount in Step-by-Step mode. Go back to where you entered the Form 1098 and correct it so that it shows only the amount that is actually on the 1098. Remove the $285.21. If you entered a separate 1098 for the $285.21, even though you didn't actually get a 1098, delete that 1098. Then switch to forms mode, open Schedule A, and enter $285 directly on line 8b. (The amount is rounded to whole dollars.) Do not use the Home Mortgage Interest Worksheet.

I appreciate your help RJS and insight into this issue. I did receive a notice and the notice states that IF I made an error, then complete an amended return. The letter does not give any specifics/basis for the calculations the IRS made for their determination that I claimed mortgage interest greater than is allowed. I have called the IRS twice and have a call for Jan 5th since they will be able to access my return then. I have never switched to the forms when using the desktop version, but will try if I need to separate the 8a and 8b amounts.
Thanks
