My wife passed away on 3/15/23 and I will be filing a joint return for 2023. The 1099C was dated 4/4/23 which was after her death. The company had been notified in late 2023 and I sent in a copy of her death certificate. Do I need to include this amount in my income? Any help you can provide would be greatly appreciated.

sorry for your loss. tell us what type of debt was forgiven. certain types have special tax rules.
It was credit card debt from a major retailer.
Yes, you must include this with your joint tax return for 2023. If the company later corrects the 1099-C, assuming you are not liable for your deceased wife's debt, then you can amend your return at that time. There are no special rules for credit card debt forgiveness.
NOTE: If you are on the 1099-C as a joint recipient of the canceled debt, you need to include it on your return. I, too, am sorry for your loss.
