if you download all info from your brokeage firm, (we are retired so we take money from investments) do you still need to input the 1099-R hard copies they send also? it seems like it is doubling the income causing you to pay double taxes when you input manually and do the downloads also. It just doesn't look right when you look at all forms. not sure what to do with this situation. my income doubles with the downloads and the manual input of 1099-R forms and you can see the 1099-R forms in the downloads too, so that is why i am questioning this and i am not sure if i am putting in double income. how come turbo tax doesn't see this as an error if the info is identical comparing downloads and manual input of 1099-R forms. at least turbo tax should show it as an error on review so you can look at it and fix before filing. any help would be appreciated. thanks

No, you have the choice of downloading them or entering them manually. You would not do both.
so because i did both i just caused myself to double paying more taxes! What an idiot I was. So I guess i was right being it looked wrong on the forms and the numbers showing as doubling our income causing us to pay more taxes. so how come turbo tax does not show this as an error on the review if the info is the same from download and manual input? I know i need to fix this for sure before I file this year. If i did this in years pas, i need to do an amendment on those taxes too, correct? How will it affect taxes when i do the amendments going forward in each year being we over paid? we for sure over paid and the IRS did not say anything. How lucky can we be.
can turbo tax get this fixed so it shows double items and gives errors and tells you to review and make sure you don't do this? thanks
There is no way for a program to know that you are inputting the same enties, as you could have more than one brokerage firm. There may be an instance where the download doesn't work and you have to manually input.
If you haven't e-filed, delete all your manual entries, after making sure the download is correct. Check your prior year returns against your hard- copies and amend if necessary. The IRS is backed up and it takes them a while to catch up.
thanks for the help. now i just created more work for myself.
You need to EITHER download the information for each 1099-R OR manually input the information. By both downloading and manually entering, you are indeed doubling the 1099-R information. Only put the information into Turbo Tax by ONE of these methods.
Go back to your income section and if you have duplicate forms 1099-R entered delete them.

You can preview your tax return prior to e-filing. Add up your Forms 1099-R that you are supposed to have and check them with lines 4 and 5 of Form 1040.
In order to preview your return if you are using TurboTax Online, please follow the instructions below:
You can preview your return in the TurboTax CD/Download software by following these steps:
