The reason I have an amount in the 1099-R box 5 is because the contributions I made to my Washington State pension before 1984 were taxed. Now that I'm receiving my pension payments, the parts from those years are being placed in box 5 which means I should use the amount in box 2a for my return.
BUT! turbo tax wants the reason for this and these are the choices:
I took out this money due to a qualified disaster
This money was from being a public safety officer
I need to file a substitute 1099-R
The corrected box is checked on this 1099-R
None of these apply
When I choose "None apply" it eventually chooses the amount in box 1 which includes the amount I wasn't supposed to be taxed on because of it being pre-taxed back all those years ago.
How can I get around this? If I have to hire someone or fill out other forms I will just pay the **bleep** tax again.
thanks anyone in WA going through this....
Nancy
