My dependent son (19, full time student) had a summer job where he earned $3,047.25. This was his only income for 2021. He received a 1099-nec instead of withholding and a w-2. He does not have a business of any type. What are the reporting requirements? I am using TT deluxe to do his taxes as I need it to do my own.

He does not have to do a schedule C unless he has expenses that he can apply to those earnings. If this was a job it sounds like a W-2 should have been issued for this income. If this is the case he will owe self-employment taxes.
The self-employment tax rate is 15.3%. That rate is the sum of 12.4% for Social Security and 2.9% for Medicare.
On a W-2 the employer pays half of that
MY DEPENDENT HAD A JOB
If your dependent has a W-2 for his after-school job, summer job, etc. you do not include the information on your own return. You can still claim your child as a dependent on your own return. He/she can file his own return for a refund of some of his withheld wages (he won’t get back anything for Social Security or Medicare), but MUST indicate on it that he can be claimed as a dependent on someone else’s return. (Supervise this closely or prepare it for him!)
If your dependent’s earnings were over $400 and were reported on a 1099Misc or 1099NEC then he must file a return and pay self-employment tax for Social Security and Medicare. Any version of the CD/download can be used for this.

This is 100% his return. Entering the 1099-nec is easy. My question is about what is next? Will he have to do a schedule C?
Thank you. How do I know the right reason for the 1099-nec? If I use the "employer should have reported w-2" option, it starts me down the path of doing a 8919, which doesn't seem appropriate. If I select "none", it seems like it will ask more questions. I just want to be sure I don't trigger something that complicates the situation.
