1099-G Oregon state Refund

Hi,

I am trying to figure out 'how much' of the Oregon State Tax Refund (kicker) i received in Y2023 is taxable in Y2024. I took itemized deductions Y2023, and there is no sales tax in Oregon. The TurboTax SW gives both options, its says the refund is not taxable following all the prompts and then after clicking this button 'make my entire refund taxable', it now considers the full amount reported in 1099-G as taxable income. I am struggling to determine whether entire amount reported on 1099-G needs to be reported or some calculation needs to be done had i take standard deduction in Y2023 instead if itemized deductions.

PS. I did not receive the exact amount listed in 1099-G as refund, the amount i got was Oregon kicker - Oregon state tax i was owing in Y23. Not sure if this is relevant in the above calculation.

Thanks for your help!

1099-G Oregon state Refund

The OR kicker is considered a state refund and might be taxable. See State and Local Refund Worksheet to verify the taxable portion

Do I need to report the state or local refund I got last year? Is it taxable? states: If all three of the following are true, your refund counts as taxable income:

  • You itemized deductions last year, instead of taking the standard deduction.
  • You claimed state and local income taxes (not general sales taxes).
  • Claiming the deduction helped you increase your federal refund or lower your tax bill.

Many people pay more state and local taxes than the $10,000 cap. Only taxes that were deducted on itemized deductions are taxable. If you paid in say $15,000 of state and local tax with a refund of $4,000, it was not used on your itemized deductions and isn't taxable.

Take a look at your Federal smart worksheet to verify the answers.
