1099-G doesn't show up on schedule 1

I have entered the 1099-g form under state tax refund, but it doesn't show up on schedule 1, line 1. I have tried to go back and edit and it keeps taking me through this loop where it says i have already entered it for this state. I don't want to delete the schedule 1 worksheet because it has other incomes on there. what should i do?

It is possible your state tax refund is not taxable, if so it wouldn't show on Schedule 1. It would not be taxable if you did not itemize your deductions on your federal tax return in the year the refund pertains to. It also may not be taxable even if you did itemize your deductions, depending on multiple factors. TurboTax will ask you questions to determine the taxability of the refund when you enter it in the program.

Where did you enter it and did you tell TurboTax you itemized your return last year?

If your total itemized taxes were more than $10,000 and the refund only makes up the amount that would be over $10,000 then it would not be taxable income.

If it was part of the $10,000 then it would be taxable income.

If it is not be sure that you enter it as State and local refund 1099-G and then say that you itemized your return.

Turbo tax is not asking me if I itemized or not. I have entered it under state and local tax refund and it still doesn't ask if I itemized or not. I'm also stuck in a loop where it says i have already entered this info for this state yet again it doesn't show up on schedule 1.

You should go back and review your entries:

  1. Go to the Wages and Income section, and go to Other Common income
  2. Select Refunds Received for State/Local Tax Returns
  3. On the Did you get a state or local tax refund in 2024? screen, select Yes
  4. On the Tell us about your refund screen, enter your total refund received in 2024
  5. After you enter the information on your refund, a different section will start asking about your itemized deductions

After these questions, you will get questions to determine if your state's refund is taxable.  See the images below for your reference.

Where do I enter a 1099-G for a state or local tax refund?

In case anyone else has this issue, I hope this will save you time. The reason ultimately was because of a glitch in turbo tax where my information from 2023 was not carried over (which I noticed when I started my taxes and painfully entered all the information by hand). We had to go to tools, delete a form, delete the carry over form and then go back to wages and incomes and input the state tax refund and then it allowed me to go through the steps again. This time it saved the info and showed up in the right spot.
