1040-X

Can the IRS reject an amended federal return for some reason? I will be sending a 1040-X for not reporting $20 in income from HSA interest income (1099-INT). This was my first year doing my taxes and I got my 1099-INT after I had filed my taxes (a little too early). I am just worried that there will be something wrong with my amended return. My original returns have already been accepted and refunds have been deposited.

Amended returns can be questioned by the IRS (or State).  If they find something wrong they would send you a letter with the amended return and let you know what you need to change or do.

Amended returns must be mailed, they cannot be e-filed.  They can take up to 16 weeks to be processed.  The amendment return is not available in TurboTax until the end of February or early March.

I will be mailing this 1040-X, as the form is already available on the IRS website. Thank you so much!
