EIC & Child Tax Credit

I was told that EIC and Child Tax credits could not be kept. I have state unemployment to pay back. State taxes was kept, understandable, but Federal, ALL was kept also. Is there any truth in the not being able to keep EIC and Child Tax Credit, or is that just a myth?  Thanks for any info.

EIC & Child Tax Credit

That is a myth.  It can be kept.   Refunds of an overpayment of a tax liability, including the portion to which your Child Tax Credit or Earned Income Credit relates, may be reduced (that is, offset) for overdue taxes from previous years or other federal or state debts that you owe.
