Did you happen to mistakenly choose actual expenses, either in the past, or on this tax return?
Not that I know of. I do not see anyplace to make that selection and in the past I have always used standard deduction.
You need to update the Business Vehicle Expenses section for your business. After you enter in your mileage, you will come to a screen that says You've got a standard mileage deduction of $xx.xx, there you will see an option No, I'll stick with the standard mileage deduction. You need to choose that option to have the standard mileage allowance apply to your vehicle expense.
Yeah but when I claimed it the way you instructed my federal tax didn't go up a cent
A Business Mileage deduction may not increase your Federal Refund.
It will reduce your Business Income on Schedule C, which in turn may reduce your Taxable Income, which in turn may increase your refund.
Look at your Schedule C, Line 31. This amount carries over to Schedule 1, Line 3, and then to Form 1040, Line 8 where you can see how much of an income deduction you received. Unless your income is reduced by a sufficient amount, a small reduction won't change your tax amount.
I am having the same problem as others whereas when I enter my vehicle mileage (6,723) it is not reflected in my business deductions; therefore not reducing my taxes. I've tried everything but to no avail
Be sure to answer "Yes" to having kept track of BOTH business AND personal miles.
(We THINK the rational is "How could you know if you used the vehicle more than 50% if you didn't keep track of both, business and personal miles?" but regardless, the program seems to need both)
