Which auto registration fee may I deduct for my new car in California?

Based CA's DMV site breaks out of my registration fees, which is the correct one to deduct to deduct?

1.) "Current registration" line item ($43),

2.) "Total Registration fee" subtotal ($236), or

3.) "Grand Total Registration Fees" ($1,995), which includes "Total Use/Sales Tax" ($1759)?

Thanks!

None of the ones you listed.  Look for the line called "Vehicle License Fee."  That is the deductible amount.

When looking at your car registration document, you will see a list of the following various fees that may be included in your annual vehicle registration payment:

  • Registration Fee
  • Vehicle License Fee (This is the fee that may be an income tax deduction)
  • Weight Fee
  • Special Plate Fee
  • County/District Fees
  • Owner Responsibility Fee

You will want to identify the Vehicle License Fee amount

If you don't have your registration document, you can go online to the CA DMV and input a few pieces of info from your car to determine your vehicle license fee.
