If you itemize deductions (Schedule A), you may claim state and local income tax or sales tax, whichever is higher.
To enter sales tax for your car in TurboTax:
- Continue working on your return in TurboTax Online. (If your return isn't open, you'll need to sign in and click Take me to my return.)
- Click Tax Tools (lower left side of your screen).
- Select Tools.
- In the pop-up window, select Topic Search.
- In the I'm looking for: box, type sales tax.
- In the results box, highlight sales tax, then click GO.
- On the Let's Compare screen, click Try Sales Tax Deduction Anyway or Continue. (The button varies depending on your current situation.)
- When asked how you want to enter your sales tax, choose EasyGuide.
- Answer the questions about where you lived, the dates, and your sales tax rate.
- If you only see the Places You Lived screen, choose Edit to access those questions.
- When you get to the Major Purchases screen, answer Yes and follow the onscreen instructions to enter the sales taxes you paid on your car purchase. (Click the screenshot below for reference.)
Note: If using the TurboTax CD/Download software, you'll use the Find function and the "Jump to" link (instead of "Tax Tools") to search for the topic.
Which deduction should I choose: sales tax or income tax?
