Where do I put medical out of pocket expenses

Health care insurance premiums, including dental and vision insurance premiums, and other medical expenses that you paid with out of pocket funds and were not reimbursed are an eligible medical expense that you can deduct using Schedule A for itemized deductions. However, only your total medical expenses that are greater than 7.5% of your Adjusted Gross Income (AGI) can be deducted. Your total itemized deductions reported on Form 1040 Schedule A must be greater than the standard deduction for your filing status to have any tax benefit.

Standard deductions for 2023

Single - $13,850 add $1,850 if age 65 or older
Married Filing Separately - $13,850 add $1,500 if age 65 or older
Married Filing Jointly - $27,700 add $1,500 for each spouse age 65 or older
Head of Household - $20,800 add $1,850 if age 65 or older

To enter your medical expenses -

Yes, you can use this on medical portion of itemized deductions if you have overall deductions greater than the standard deductions.  Keep in mind that medical expenses must be greater than 7.5% of your adjusted gross income (AGI) or none of them will be used.

Other common deductions are mortgage interest, real estate or property taxes, local and state income taxes, donations.

For single taxpayers and married individuals filing separately, the Standard Deduction is$13,850 in 2023.

Formarried couples filing jointly is$27,700, and

For heads of households, the Standard Deduction is$20,800

If you're at least 65 years old or blind, you can claim an additional deduction in 2023 of:

  • $1,850 for single or Head of Household
  • $1,500 for married or Qualified Surviving Spouse.

If you're both 65 and blind, the additional deduction amount is doubled.
