Here's how to get to the employee job expense interview.   You must be able to itemize deductions on Schedule A.   Employee job expenses are further limited.  They are subject to the 2% rule for miscellaneous expenses, which means they only start to count when the total of your miscellaneous expenses (which includes job expenses) exceeds 2% of AGI.

Try this navigation:

  • Open the return ("Take me to my return.")
  • When the return is open, click in the left menu column on TAX TOOLS, then TOOLS.
  • In the Tools window, choose TOPIC SEARCH.
  • Enter the phrase job expenses without quotes.
  • Select job expenses, employee and click GO.
  • Next screen is "Tell us about the occupation you have expenses for."
  • Continue that interview topic.

What kind of work?   Employee job expenses (W-2 job)?   Or self-employed/independent contractor (Schedule C) expenses?

Does that mean you are an employee paid by an employer, and your income is reported on a  W-2?
