Using 1098-T by parent and dependent student

I received 1098-T where box 1 amount is much larger than box 5 amount. I am a dependent and so my parent is using 1098-T. 1098-T includes Fellowship stipend for summer work that I did. Only way for me to enter Fellowship stipend (Schedule 1, #8.r) in TurboTax is to answer yes for "Did you have educational expense" and then fill out 1098-T information.

1) Is that the right way to go about to show Fellowship stipend?

2) Since box 1 amount is far less than box 5 amount, TurboTax is not even considering the Fellowship stipend amount for Schedule 1 but is using it to compute that box 1 amount is still more than box 5 amount and so is calculating the Fellowship stipend as non-taxable amount. Is that correct?

Using 1098-T by parent and dependent student

1. You need to enter the 1098-T.

  • Your parents should be entering the 1098-T with box 1 of $4,000 and box 5 blank or zero.
  • You report the 1098-T with as it came with only one change. Subtract $4,000 from box 1 when you enter your form.

2. Maybe. Fellowship used towards education expenses is not taxable. Only the portion above expenses is taxable. It must still be entered.
