Third stimulate check

Last year, my son filed tax return as independence (student) and this year I claim him as a dependent.

Last year, he received the third stimulate check so for this year file, should I also include $1400 from his part  as

accounted for third stimulate check as well. EX: $1400 (me)+ $1400 (my wife) + $1400 (my son).

The reason I asked because in your Turbotax only mentioned the names of joint filing but did not mention the dependent one.

Thanks

Third stimulate check

You only report on your tax return the amount you received for you and your spouse, i.e. $2,800.

If your son is your dependent this year, then you'll receive the third stimulus for him as the Recovery rebate credit.

Your son does not have to pay back the stimulus he received last year.

In TurboTax Online, to claim the Recovery Rebate credit please do the following:

  1. Sign into your account and continue from where you left off
  2. Click on Federal in the left-hand column, then on Federal Review on the top of the screen
  3. On the next page titled Did you [or your spouse] get a third stimulus payment?, answer Yes or No
  4. Follow the interview and answer all questions
  5. TurboTax will determine whether you are entitled to any additional stimulus
  6. Any stimulus amount remaining due to you will show as a credit on line 30 of your form 1040.

Third stimulate check

Well, you may have 2 issues.

1.  Since you are able to claim him for 2021 I wonder if you could have claimed him for 2020.  If you could have claimed him—even if you chose not to—-he should have checked the box on his return saying that someone else can claim him. In that event he would not have gotten the stimulus.

2.  If he qualifies and is claimed as your dependent in 2021 you are eligible to get the $1400 stimulus for him so would report that you got $2800 and the program would give you the extra $1400 for him.
