There is no way for me to reach the "home office deduction; doesn't work: "arrow downJump tohome office deduction Go to the home office deduction section of TurboTax"

Jump to... this feature doesn't work for a "home office deduction." It takes me to a page that is NOT that. So, I cannot enter a "home office deduction," defeating the purpose of using TurboTax Self-Employed.

Down the left side of the screen, you may also try Tax Tools / Tools / Topic Search and enter home office deduction.  Then click the link in the list.

In TurboTax online Self-Employed, I am able to enter home office deduction under the Search microscope in the upper right hand corner of the screen.  I am able to click on jump to home office deduction which takes me to the Self-employed work summary.  From there you may:

  • Click Edit to the right of your self-employment activity.
  • At the screen Here's your tax preparation info, select Add expenses for this work.
  • At the screen Select the expenses you know you had, select home office.

There is no way to close or remove this post, even by the Creator--me; terrible UI. Anyway, please disregard this post, as even since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic, one cannot take the Home Office Deduction, but the TurboTax UI DOES NOT LET YOU KNOW THIS: you have to do research about it.

Under current tax law, the home office deduction is available for self-employed individuals reporting income on Schedule C Profit or Loss from Business of the Federal 1040 tax return.

If you are an employee working remotely rather than a business owner, you unfortunately do not qualify for the home office tax deduction (however some states do allow this tax deduction for employees).

Prior to the Tax Cuts and Job Act (TCJA) passed in 2017, employees could deduct unreimbursed employee business expenses including the home office deduction. However, for tax years 2018 through 2025, these deductions for employee business expenses have been eliminated.

H & thanks for your response. Unfortunately, this didn't work: it doesn't do anything, just takes me back to that main work page; end-result is nil.

Hi, Ok, then this deduction does apply to me, as my home is my office. Thanks! Although, this didn't solve my UIX issue, it's definitely helpful.

There are two places within TurboTax where home office expenses may be claimed.  Neither of these can be reached with a 'jump to' option.

The first option is to claim home office expense for someone who is self-employed and filing Schedule C for their business.  You need to be working in the Schedule C Business Income and Expenses section of the tax return to see options for entering home office expenses.  You can search and 'jump to' Schedule C to get to this section.

The second, less common option, is to claim home office expense for an employee being paid with a W-2.  This is less common because unreimbursed employee business expenses may only be claimed for certain types of employees right now.  This deduction was suspended by the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act for tax years 2018 through 2025 for Federal returns.  Some state returns do still recognize this deduction though, so it can still be entered as part of your return.  You would find the home office expense for this situation under the Form 2106 Job Related Expenses section.  You can search and 'jump to' Form 2106 to get to this section.
