Section 179 would be the deduction you took on the vehicle in the year you purchased it if you chose to depreciate it rather than use the mileage allowance. So, if you never depreciated it, the section 179 deduction would be zero. If you did depreciate it, you would need to look on form 4562 in the year your purchased it and the amount will be listed there.
Thank you for the information. I looked at each years (2009-2018) form 4562 and every year it has a "0" or is blank where my vehicle is listed. The only place that has an amount is where the standard mileage deduction is calculated.
Does this mean I don't need to enter anything in either of the boxes for listed property recapture?
(All depreciation plus section 179 deductions taken before 2019)
(Depreciation recomputed on this property using the straight-line depreciation method)
My standard mileage deduction for all years, not including 2019, is right at $12k.
Just want to get this right and be done.
Thank you so much for your help!
So, if you had taken the section 179 depreciation, then it should be showing in your prior year depreciation schedule. Any amount paid for the asset will be considered capital gains and will be taxed as ordinary income.
Thank you for your response. I'm still not clear though on what I need to report.
There is no dollar amount other than $0.00 in the depreciation schedule for assets because I didn't claim the purchase of this vehicle since it was primarily used for personal use. My business use never exceeded 22% of the total annual miles.
The only exemption that I took was the standard mileage deduction for nine years prior to 2019. I stopped using this vehicle for business on February 1, 2019 as I closed my business.
So, am I supposed to put the mileage deduction as the income that needs to be recaptured?
Thank you again.
When you use the standard mileage rate a portion of that rate includes depreciation. You need to recapture that depreciation to reduce the cost basis of the vehicle.
IRS Publication 463 Travel, Gift, and Car Expenses on page 24 has the chart for Rate of Depreciation Allowed in Standard Mileage Rate. You can use this chart to determine the depreciation for the vehicle using the standard mileage rate.
